Purine Foods - Avoid with Gout

  • Organ meat, shellfish, herring, anchovies, sardines, lentils, dry peas and beans, seafood, alcohol, asparagus and mushrooms.
  • Oranges – Acidic and contain tartaric acid and therefore not metabolized correctly.
  • Coffee, Tea, any caffeine containing drinks or substances.
  • Refined carbohydrates (sugars) and saturated fats (fried food, butter, margarine, etc).
  • Drink plenty of water to flush out and stop crystals precipitating.
  • Don’t fast or go on diets that lose weight quickly, as can increase uric acid levels.  A healthy weight range is important.  This eases the pressure through weight bearing joints.
  • Try an epsom salt bath (can buy from the supermarket) tip whole packet (usually about 250g) into footbath and soak in warm-hot water for 15-20 minutes.  This will excrete the uric acid from the area.
  • Alkaline diet as much as possible – I have included a sheet of acidic foods which you should avoid.

This information is used as a guide only to help assist gout.   If you follow to the best of your ability then you will notice a marked improvement.  The effort put in is only as good as the results you see.  If there are particular foods that you are aware cause great pain then it is important to avoid these foods.
