Cellulite - the mystery

One of the most frustrating aesthetic puzzles for women of all ages and sizes is cellulite. Over 80% of women develop cellulite at some point in their lives. Cellulite – that bumpy, dimply skin results from enlarged packets of body fat deposited underneath the skin that push up against underlying connective tissue. When the underlying fat cells balloon up it limits the space under the skin and the pressure forces the fat right up to the top layers of skin.

The difference between normal fat and cellulite is the structure of the overlying skin and of the underlying connective tissue that determines whether your skin is smooth or rippled in appearance. Hormones can wreak havoc on connective tissue making it stiffer and less elastic. As the bands of connective tissue contract and stiffen with ages they pull down on the skin even more, increasing fat stores to push outward in the surrounding areas. As we get older the outer layer of skin weakens, thins and loses elasticity. Gravity takes its toll and the skin begins to sag. Since connective tissue columns remain intact, they often contract and stiffen further, equals more cellulite. Yo Yo dieting can affect cellulite as this can further compromise skin elasticity with the skin having to loosen and contract often

Why do Women suffer more than men?

· Thicker Epidermis – men’s is thicker than women (in more ways than one) this is the top layer of the skin; therefore the skin is much more resilient to structural changes, ie dimpling.

· Different Skin Structure – Female fat cells sit within large, side by side separate compartments that form columns underneath the skins surface. When these cells fatten the compartments overflow and the fat pushes upwards. Male skin follows a crisscrossed pattern and the fat containers are smaller. They create one big solid blob of fat not lots of dimply smaller ones.

· Underwear – the looser and less of the better as tight underwear constricts blood flow around the butt and thighs.

Lifestyle choices

· Eat a healthy diet high in protein and healthy fats and limit sugar and carbohydrates.

· Exercise – cardio and weights for calorie burning and muscle toning.

· Hydrating your cells keeps them plump and healthy and prevents retention as your body is flushing out the toxins.

· Smoking is a big no no as it decreases elastin and collagen, its a poison to connective tissue.
