Gold Coast Naturopath: Hormones and fat loss

There are fewer places in the world where females feel aware of their body image and weight than here in the sun, and beach capital, the Gold Coast.

As a female we often struggle with weight loss. Even though you are doing all the right things but your weight is just not shifting or in certain areas (normally the abdominal area) it just won’t budge and that is where a natural approach can help.

This blog post looks at some natural approaches to fat loss and getting the body in balance.

Hormones and fat loss

Your hormones - control your metabolism, influence where you store your fat and control your appetite and cravings. If you have even a slight hormonal imbalance this can affect your fat loss goals. You can however ‘reset’ your hormones to kick start fat loss once again.

Hormones are an essential part of the way we collect fat, combat stress and maintain muscle. This is why hormonal balance is essential to ensure an energetic and happy life.

Detox for fat loss: Detoxing is the first step

Detoxing includes includes good sleep, exercise and diet. You need to eat the correct foods to flush your system of toxins and avoid foods that irritate your digestive system. This can cause you to crave foods that your body doesn’t actually need. If you’re eating when you shouldn’t then your hormones are already imbalanced and storing fat.

The main foods to avoid are high glycemic foods – this is a measurement carried out on carbohydrate-containing foods and their impact on blood sugar.

We all know how high carbohydrate foods lead to the accumulation fat but it also affects your hormones; therefore making it a double whammy when trying to lose fat.

You should aim to eat foods that are 55 and below GI. Foods to avoid are – potatoes, beetroot, corn, sweet potatoes, apricots, watermelon, pineapple and millet. For a more comprehensive list go to http://www.glycemicindex.com/.

Belly Fat – too much cortisol (released from your adrenal glands when you stress) is one of the main contributors to belly fat. Foods that decrease cortisol include spinach, citrus, nuts, beans and barley. They are some amazing herbs that also assist with adrenal support like withania and rheumannia.

Back Fat – Another area that can be hard to shift. This can be linked to high insulin levels. To assist this try some foods that contain conjugated linoleic acid – milk, yoghurt and beef. Also wholegrain foods and vegetables are important.

Buttocks Fat – This area is typical of high oestrogen levels. Try Cruciferous veggies especially broccoli (if you don’t like broccoli Indole is a great supplement to help balance oestrogen), cauliflower and cabbage. To remove excess oestrogen in the blood stream try foods high in polyphenols like chia, flax and sesame seeds.

Dietary Approaches to fat loss

More proteins and good quality fats like avocado, fish, nuts and eggs over carbohydrates will level your blood sugar levels.  Your stomach will feel fuller for longer and you will have more stable energy. Blood sugar levels will peak and trough when you eat carbohydrates and will stablise when you have protein.

Protein powder – is a great way to get extra protein into your daily intake. Make a smoothie with protein powder, chia seeds, coconut and almond milk with some low glycemic fruit like strawberries or blueberries.

Water – drink plenty of filtered water to flush out toxins and hydrate your cells.

Sandwiches/wraps  – Most people will feel full after a sandwich this is usually because they are bloated from the bread. A salad is a much better alternative – add some protein like chicken or egg.

Drinks – avoid high calorie drinks like juices, flavoured mineral waters and alcohol.

Fruit – eat fruit in moderation and opt for low glycemic options.
