As more people become aware on the Gold Coast of the symptoms of depression the more people are willing to learn about the condition and natural treatments for the condition.

If you are having constant feelings of sadness, doom and gloom, lack motivation for a long period of time you could be suffering depression. We often feel sad and down but if you can’t seem to ‘snap out of it’ then you might need to seek further help.

Depression is not stand alone “depression” in many cases.

There are often other associated mental health conditions in conjunction with it – including anxiety, insomnia and agoraphobia. Although depression is debilitating there are many support groups and people that can help.

Often traditional doctors attack depression with the heavy medications straight up.

These are called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s) which in some cases are necessary; and sometimes not so much.

I am not about to sit here and preach about what you should and should not do: just merely to educate in other therapies and treatments that may work in conjunction with whatever path you choose.

Depression has many categories and stages of severity; however I would like to discuss what can be done improve state of mind.

Natural Treatment Approaches for Depression

Start with the body - A Duke University study found that 30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise three times a week was as effective at relieving symptoms of depression. It was also discovered that depression was less likely to return in people who continued to exercise.

Meditation is a technique helping focus attention on the moment. This helps to develop an attitude of openness and acceptance, which may have antidepressant effects.

Yoga is also a mind-body exercise which you move through a series of poses that help improve balance, flexibility, strength, and focus. The poses are thought to: align the spine, improve mental clarity, rejuvenate the nervous system, reduce stress and promote relaxation and emotional wellness.

These techniques are beneficial in everyday life, not only in mild to severe depression. Although ‘you don’t feel like it’ nothing better than releasing some endorphins, love those happy hormones.

Herbal treatments for depression

St Johns wort has traditionally been the first herb people think of in the treatment of depression.  Definitely, a herb to take into consideration however, I personally find it more appropriate in mild to moderate depression. In some cases a stronger approach is needed.

I mentioned neurotransmitters in my blog on anxiety and once again they are extremely important in the treatment of depression.  Whereas doctors medicate with SSRI’s as naturopaths we support your body as a whole. This is important in the conversion to serotonin via the use of 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan). This is a magic little NT that converts via all the biochemical and neurochemical pathways to the brain. Please consult your health practitioner before take 5-HTP.

S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM-e) is a chemical that occurs in the body naturally. It’s involved in many bodily functions, including brain and liver function. Often you will see SAM-e in a tablet formulation with 5-HTP, they work well in conjunction.

Depression is not cut and dry and support is also needed elsewhere in the body including the nervous system, adrenals and digestion. There are many traditional nervous system, adrenal and digestive herbs available.

I have only touched on a few areas of concern in the treatment approach to depression.

I will emphasise again, please consult a naturopath before you take any herbs, vitamins or minerals with any current natural or doctors prescribed medication.

There are numerous contraindications and cautions that must be taken.  Even if you are currently taking anti-depressants there are other alternatives but make sure you do it correctly and with support as stopping an anti-depressant cold will let to some nasty withdrawal affects.
