Health Fund Update

Health Fund update effective as from 1st April 2019

And for the Bad news… The Coalition Government has legislated reforms to private health insurance that take effect 1 April 2019. They have compelled Australia’s health funds to change private health insurance policies to exclude certain natural medicine modalities.

Health funds have no alternative than to follow the law and have begun to advise us of their plans to implement these changes. These Health funds include – BUPA, Medi-bank Private, HBF, Australian Unity, AHM, HCF, NIB along with its partner health insurance brands APIA Health Insurance, Qantas Health Insurance, Suncorp, TAL Health Insurance and AAMI. For funds not listed you could contact them directly.

What this means for you, as a health fund payer… Health funds will no longer be allowing claiming on – Alexander Technique, Aromatherapy, Bowen Therapy, Buteyko, Feldenkrais, Western Herbalism, Homeopathy, Iridology, Kinesiology, Naturopathy, Pilates, Reflexology, Rolfing, Shiatsu, Tai Chi and Yoga

You will still be able to claim on Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine and Massage Therapy, includes Remedial Massage, Myotherapy and Traditional Chinese Medicine Remedial Massage. Nutrition, Counselling, Hypnotherapy.

How this affects you with me directly is that you will still be able to claim your massages if you have that cover in your health fund, as per usual. However, at this stage BUPA does not recognise me as a remedial massage therapist, so you will not be able to claim your massage if you are with BUPA. I will be pushing this harder to find a solution in the future as it has something to do with the college, I studied at to get my massage qualifications all those years ago. Stupid really.
